Mary Lou Retton appears to be in distress as she attempts to complete a sobriety test for West Virginia law enforcement officials in bodycam footage from her arrest in May.
According to the court documents at the time examined, Retton was arrested on May 17 in Marion County, West Virginia, on suspicion of DUI.
According to the Associated Press, which cited a criminal complaint, the five-time Olympic medallist was allegedly seen in her vehicle in a Marion County AutoZone parking lot with a screw-top bottle of wine in her passenger seat.
In the bodycam footage that Entertainment Tonight was able to obtain, Retton, 57, is seen being instructed to perform the sobriety test by a Fairmont City Police Department officer.
Retton seems obedient as the officer leads her up the stairs, but occasionally she shows her disbelief by gasping and exclaiming, "Oh my God."
The test requires her to raise her foot six inches off the ground and count until the officer tells her to stop, and she seems to find it difficult to finish.
It seems like Retton has trouble counting past nine.
She has to tie the oxygen tube to her nose during the test because she appears to be having breathing difficulties at one point.
Retton told in 2024 that she has been on daily oxygen since she recovered from a severe case of pneumonia in 2023 that was so bad that doctors believed she might not survive.
In July 2024, the former Dancing with the Stars contestant told that she became so critically ill during her month-long hospital stay that the doctors told her four daughters she might not make it.
She said "It's been really difficult." " My lungs are severely scarred. It will take a lifetime to recover. I was stripped of my physicality, and that was all I had. It's embarrassing.
Retton was hit with a $100 fine, which is typical for first-time, non-aggravated offenses in the area, after entering a no contest plea to a non-aggravated DUI charge.
"What transpired was wholly inappropriate. There are no excuses from me. Through her lawyer Edmund J. Rollo, she apologized profusely to her family, friends, and fans for disappointing them.
